Nearly all windows manufactured today are double paned. The reason is that they are so much more energy efficient than the single pane windows from decades past. Double pane windows are part of what's called an insulated glass unit or IGU. The IGU fits inside the windowframe and contains the two panes of glass, the space between the glass that greatly reduces the noise (see our page on soundproof windows cost for more), the gas fills and the spacer. Together, they are the most important part of making a replacement window energy efficient.

Dual Pane Window Costs

Double pane windows cost $300 fully installed on the very low end all the way up to $2000 fully installed on the high end. Most consumers would do well to stay away from the low end windows ($300 to $400 installed) that aren't going to provide the design, craftsmanship and quality components that are necessary for long term value. Vinyl windows make up over half of the replacement window market and can cost as much as $950 per window fully installed. The average cost of vinyl windows is $500 to $650 installed. There are some excellent options at this price point that should provide consumers with excellent performance and durability that maximizes your return on investment.
